First Steps: Sarah Roberts Learning Unit Plan

Building a Nation with Founding Children of the 1800s

Students will analyze the life of an African-American founding child, Sarah Roberts, to see how children contributed to the city of Boston in the 1800s. Using this case study, students will explore the places Sarah Roberts lived and learned, examining the challenges she faced. We will explore the ways her community supported her as she challenged segregation and examine the details of her everyday lives.

Overarching Ideas: Was the Roberts family right for standing up for their daughter and other African American children when they took on the fight to end segregation in the Boston Public Schools?

Essential Question: How do we develop fairness in our community?
